Most gifts are used, eaten or worn and then put away. A picture stays out. It hangs in someone's hallway or above their desk and becomes part of the room they wake up in, which is a lovely thing to give and also a small responsibility. Choosing art for someone else's wall asks a different kind of attention than choosing it for your own. This is a reflection on how to give it well.

Start with their home, not your taste
It is natural to choose the picture you love. The better starting point is usually the room it will live in. Next time you visit, notice what is already on their walls and shelves. Are the colours warm or cool? Is there a lot of wood, or white, or black? Do they keep photographs of people, of places, or none at all? A home says a great deal about what someone likes to look at, often more clearly than they would put it in words.
Two studies by Francis Flynn and colleagues are worth knowing here. In one, people who received gifts did not appreciate expensive ones more than modest ones, even though the people giving them expected they would. In another, recipients were more grateful for gifts they had asked for than for surprises, while givers assumed the opposite. Neither finding means a picture should never be a surprise. They suggest that paying attention to the person counts for more than the size of the gesture.
A picture is one of the few gifts that is looked at every single day, which is a lovely thing and also a responsibility.

Choosing the image
It can help to think about their days rather than their taste. A friend who is always rushing might like Cuba Girl, a woman standing still in the quiet of a Havana night, paired with the Word of Intention Presence. Someone who has just moved in with a partner might smile at The Space We Share, two figures crossing one wide beach, each on their own path beneath the same horizon, paired with Compassion. For a parent or grandparent, Old Star, an older woman crossing a Budapest street in well worn All Star shoes, often says something that is hard to say directly.
Because every photograph at Intention is paired with a Word, the gift can start from either side. Some people find the image first. Others begin with the Word they would like to give, and let the photograph follow.
Sizes and frames that are easy to welcome
A large piece asks the person to rearrange a room. A smaller one asks only for a nail. That makes the smaller sizes, from 13x18 cm up to around 30x40 cm, the easiest to give, since they can lean on a shelf, stand on a desk or join a wall that already has pictures on it. If you know their home well and there is a clear empty wall waiting, a larger piece can be a generous gesture.
For frames, quiet choices travel best. Natural wood suits most homes, black suits walls with other black frames, and white disappears gently into a white room. Our Slim Frame is slim solid wood (pine or ash), and the Gallery Frame is 20 mm oak, a little more substantial. Both hold the photograph on an uncoated matte paper in a natural off white, behind shatterproof plexiglass.

The note that goes with it
A few lines about why you chose the image often matter as much as the image. It does not need to be long. Where you saw it, what it reminded you of, why the Word made you think of them. Years later, the note is often what people remember when they look at the picture, and it is where the gift becomes yours.
The note is where the gift becomes yours.
When a gift card is the kinder choice
Sometimes the most thoughtful gift is the choice itself. If you do not know their home, or the person has strong opinions about what hangs on their walls, a gift card lets them find their own photograph and their own Word, in a size that fits the space they actually have. Gift cards are available from 25 to 250 euros, and they work across the whole collection, from Wall Art to Intention Wear.
Every piece is made to order once it is chosen, so it helps to give it a little time before a birthday or a holiday. Then, some ordinary evening, a picture goes up on a wall you do not live with, and you become part of a room you will only visit now and then.

A quiet extension of this idea
Our pieces are built around this principle. A single word, placed so it naturally comes back into your attention during the day. Not something you have to focus on the whole day, just something that stays with you.
